Biography
Charlie Firestone has been Executive Director of the Aspen Institute Communications and Society Program, since 1989. He also served as Executive Vice President of the Aspen Institute for Policy Programs and International Activities from 1997-2000. Firestone is a communications attorney and law professor, formerly director of the UCLA Communications Law Program 1977-85, an attorney at Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp in Los Angeles until 1990, first president of the Los Angeles Board of Telecommunications Commissioner, 1984-86, an appellate attorney for the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, 1969-73, and director of litigation for the public interest law firm, Citizens Communications Center, for four years, 1973-77. He was a visiting professor in public policy at the Duke University Sanford Institute in 2003, and has been a GLOCOM Fellow at the Japanese Institute for Global Communications since 2004. Firestone is a member of the board of directors of the Anwarul Quadir Foundation, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Cosmos Club in Washington, DC.
