Harlan Mandel


Biography
Harlan Mandel is Deputy Managing Director of Media Development Loan Fund, an international non-profit helping independent news media in developing democracies become self-sustainable. Working in the former Soviet Union, the Balkans, Asia, Africa and Latin America, MDLF acts as a non-profit venture capital fund, providing low-cost financing supported by management and technology training to help independent news businesses become long-term agents of democratic change. Since 1996, MDLF has provided over $50 million in affordable financing to more than 50 independent newspapers, radio stations and TV companies in 19 countries.

Before joining MDLF in 1998, Harlan served as Deputy General Counsel for the Open Society Institute. Prior to that, he practiced law in New York and Los Angeles with the firm of Morrison & Foerster.

Harlan received his JD from Columbia University School of Law in 1989, and holds a BA in International Relations and Asian Studies from the University of Pennsylvania. He is a member of the New York and California bars.
