Biography
The primary adventures of my life have been devoted to the study, enjoyment, and protection of works of art and architecture. After a long stay in Europe as an art historian, I moved to New York City twenty-five years ago to head the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, which devotes its resources to museum programs for the conservation and display of art, to the preservation of significant works of European architecture, and to.the training of scholars and conservators. These activities led to my participation as a Trustee on a number of not-for-profit boards relating to cultural heritage, most particularly the World Monuments Fund, an organization that works with local communities and public authorities around the world to help them preserve the significant sites and monuments that matter in their lives.
