Thoughts
Americans will soon hear that they have cancer more often than hearing they have heart disease. Progress has been made, countless lives have been saved, however there is much more work to be done. There has been progress in cancer treatment, for example the breast cancer death rate has declined every year over the past few years. However, the number of cancer cases each year continue to climb, and the overall death rate has not significantly fallen. The modest gains in cancer treatment success can be attributed lalrgely to early detection.
One of the keys to making early detection successful is education. We need to create even more awareness on the many tests and tools out there to help detect cancer. We also need to continue to research the "why & how". Why does cancer develop and how does it develop so that we can continue to find ways to prevent it from ever happening. We need to see continued support from individuals because unfortunately, government funding for cancer research continues to see cut backs. We are seeing a more educated donor, researching nonprofits prior to choosing their philanthropic paths. I am pleased to see resources available to help in that process. I hope that people continue their generosity to the efforts of cancer research and prevention as well as all the other important causes nationally and worldwide. |
