Biography
Bill grew up in the socially progressive environment of Minnesota in the 1950s and 1960s and serving in the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in the 1970s focused his energy on affordable housing. During a 25-year stint in law practice at Latham & Watkins, he was exposed to the respective strengths and weaknesses of the business sector, government, and citizen organizations and began working to combine them for greater effectiveness. In 2003, he left law practice to become volunteer president of an organization he helped to found, Stewards of Affordable Housing for the Future (SAHF). SAHF’s mission is to build a base of strong non-profits able to use and improve government programs, raise private capital, and engage residents, with the goal of buying and keeping affordable hundreds of thousands of rental homes for the poor in America and giving the residents a chance to improve their lives.
