Thoughts
“It takes as much energy to wish as it does to plan.” - Eleanor Roosevelt

For more than two decades people have wished that homelessness would simply go away. In that time, we have spent much energy addressing the needs of people who are homeless, but with little attention given to strategies that can reduce the number of people who are homeless to zero. Six years ago, the National Alliance to End Homelessness issued a challenge to America to end homelessness in ten years. Our Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness provides a road map to follow: strengthen prevention; focus on permanent housing; support long-term, data-driven strategies at the community level; and rebuild the basic support system for low-income Americans. The power of our ideas has spread. The challenge to end homelessness in ten years is taking hold.

Our work is possible thanks to those who stand with us. Ending homelessness will be the result of the forward-thinking actions and continued investments of our many partners: corporate and foundation donors, concerned individuals, a committed Board of Directors, federal, state and local governments, and the more than 5,000 public sector and private nonprofit organizations that are changing the way they combat homelessness.
