Free a Prisoner

Problem

In many parts of Asia it is tremendously difficult to lodge complaints against police and government officers. People who dare to make complaints often are counter-attacked through false charges and many other ways. In Burma, farmers who complain about damage caused to their crops by negligent agricultural officers are sued, or worse. Many end up in jail. There is no get-out-of-jail-free card. But there are lawyers willing to help, if their expenses can be covered.

The Gift

Your small contribution will be enough to cover the costs of a lawyer appearing for an entire court case in Burma. Think about it. This amount doesn't cover the cost of even an hour of a lawyer's time in many countries; perhaps yours too. But for a rural family in Burma, it could be the difference between having to sell precious livestock or mortgage their house. It could be the difference between survival and tragedy. And it may just win the day in court too. If this is the first time that you ever thought of hiring a lawyer as a present to someone then perhaps that's reason enough to do it.
