Problem
Natural disasters such as the recent Myanmar cyclone, the China earthquake, the Indonesian tsunami, and the Chilean volcanic eruption not only robs hundreds of thousands of people of their homes and all of their belongings, but also severely limits (if not completely eliminates) their access to food and clean drinking water. Humanitarian response is desperately needed to provide for these men, women, and children who are left with nothing by no fault of their own.
The Gift
Your gift of $20 will enable the World Food Program (WFP) to provide 40 people with meals in areas which have been devastated by malnutrition and death as a result of a natural catastrophe. These gifts allow WFP to engage in emergency operations that airlift food assistance to victims such as Juana Garamendi and her two sons who suffered in the wake of the 2007 Peruvian earthquake.
In just minutes, 90% of the population of Juana’s town lost their houses, crops and ultimately their livelihoods. WFP responded immediately and offered assistance to 80,000 people in the form of rice, beans, cooking oil, wheat flour and lentils along with other necessary non-food items. Juana reported that thanks to WFP, she and others like her have been able to afford living expenses and save some money in order to rebuild not only her town, but her life.
Every time a disaster occurs, the number of cases such as Juana’s can rise into the thousands.
