Problem

After years of civil war in Southern Sudan, thousands of children have been previously recruited as soldiers or have been associated with armed groups, and thus are more likely to drop out of school. Girls’ education is considered even less of a priority because of cultural beliefs. As a result, girl’s enrollment in schools is half of that of boys and only 1% complete primary school.

The Gift

This gift will provide one year of primary education to a child who needs a second chance to go to school in Southern Sudan.
The BRAC strategy in Southern Sudan is to cater to the needs of children deprived of any formal educational opportunities. These children are usually in remote locations and have lifestyles are not easily accommodated (such as poor children, street children, internally displaced, former child soldiers) to the routines of formal schools. BRAC plans to have at least 70% of the total number of students enrolled be girls and aims to have 95% of the children graduate to secondary school after completing the non-formal primary education program.
