Wild gorilla populations in Africa have significantly declined in recent years as a result of habitat destruction and logging practices, illegal hunting for the bushmeat trade, and susceptibility to various diseases and genetic disorders.

The Gift

Researchers at the San Diego Zoo have long been dedicated to the conservation of gorillas, adopting a holistic approach by addressing issues in the field, in the lab, and in managed care. Our researchers continue to conduct extensive investigations on the genetic variability of the more than 20 gorillas at the San Diego Zoo and the Wild Animal Park, many of which are wild born and provide a unique glimpse into the genetic health of wild populations in Africa.
