Problem
Rapid climate change has prompted serious concern over the potential consequences of global warming to the world’s ecological systems and wildlife. Burning of fossil fuels has altered the delicate balance of earth’s environment and the effects are already being seen. Glaciers are melting, sea levels are rising, wildlife ranges are shifting north, and invasive species are colonizing new areas all around the globe.
The Gift
Defenders of Wildlife is tackling the climate change issue by trying to understand the possible effects on wildlife and wild places. Our recent report, Refuges at Risk: America's 10 Most Endangered National Wildlife Refuges 2006, highlights the potential threats of continued warming to vulnerable refuges, and what we collectively need to do to combat such devastating changes. Further, we continue to work with policymakers in Congress to expand the use of renewable energies, such as wind, solar, and biomass.
