Problem

Every year, 14 million teenage girls (aged 15 to 19) worldwide give birth; at least 70,000 girls between the ages of 10 and 19 die from the complications of pregnancy and childbirth. Accurate, reliable, and user-friendly materials are desperately needed to educate young people in developing countries on safe and effective reproductive health care so they can get the information and services they need to avoid unwanted pregnancy and HIV/AIDS infection.

The Gift

FCI’s ground-breaking set of materials for adolescents (video, discussion guide, handbook), originally developed for English-speaking Africa, helps adolescents develop important “life skills” to avoid unwanted pregnancy and HIV/AIDS, and identify their goals. Independent assessments attest to the high quality of our materials. Our original set has now been adapted and translated into eight languages for use by governments, schools, youth groups, churches and health workers in Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean. Thousands of peer educators, youth counselors, and others have been trained to use the materials to reach out to adolescents.
