Problem

Students who cannot read at a comfortable level experience significant difficulties mastering academic content, putting them at substantial risk of failure in school and beyond. Research shows that 1 in 5 students in a classroom has a print or learning disability that prevents him or her from reading traditional printed materials. Further, less than 5% of all print publications are available to the learning and print disabled, compounding the reading challenges these students already face.

The Gift

Your gift will add a new children’s book to our digital library for people with print disabilities, Bookshare.org. We will buy a children’s book from our teacher recommended reading list, scan it and make an accessible version available to the hundreds of students with print disabilities that are members of Bookshare.org. Students can then download it, or one of our other 29,000 plus books, to be read as Braille, large print or synthesized speech at school or home.
