Problem

Female genital mutilation (FGM), often referred to as 'female circumcision', comprises all procedures involving partial or total removal of the external female genitalia. Once girls undergo FGM, they are often married and their education ends.

The Gift

This gift provides an alternative rite of passage for ten 14-year-old Maasai girls who refuse to submit to the ritual of female genital mutilation (FGM). A gift of $1,000 provides 10 girls with protection from genital mutilation and the experience of an alternative rite of passage.
