Problem
An estimated 42% of children between 1 and 5 years face chronic malnutrition in Lesotho. School meals are made outside and during rainy and snowy weather, lunch cannot be prepared. Students must go the day without any food. While a few schools have traditional stoves, these are expensive and environmentally unsound because their usage requires a large amount of fuel or wood. Traditional stoves emit a lot of smoke and are often placed in poorly ventilated kitchens, which can lead to sickness.
The Gift
Your gift of $98 will construct a fuel efficient stove for one school and help the World Food Program fight hunger and malnutrition all over the world.
With a stove, schools can prepare meals inside when the weather is poor, make meals more quickly and receive revenue from carbon credit financing. The stoves are locally constructed and consume less fuel than traditional-style ovens. This lowers the demand for charcoal and wood, and contributes to the protection of local forest resources. These stoves are also beneficial because they emit less smoke, which reduces the negative impact of smoke inhalation on cooks, students and staff.
