Cause Overview
The international scientific community, backed up by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, has reached a clear consensus: rising concentrations of greenhouse gas emissions in our atmosphere are already leading to dangerous climate change. Our children and grandchildren will live in a world of more unpredictable and extreme weather, disrupted natural systems, sea level rise, and new threats to health, food water, and security.
As frightening as these facts are, we can still do a great deal to avert the more serious consequences of climate change. If we make rapid changes in the ways that we make and use energy, consume, travel, and communicate in the next decade, we can create a healthy low-carbon economy that will help curb and reverse the growth in greenhouse gas emissions.
Public, political, and business support for action is growing rapidly, particularly in North America and Europe, and the non-profit sector is working hard to accelerate and support responsible action. Climate change and environmental charities are harnessing knowledge and resources, coordinating leadership, and catalyzing further changes in perception and behavior at all levels of society, government, and business.
Tackling climate change is the defining challenge of the first part of the twenty-first century. When donors support charities that are working on this challenge, they are moving away from being a part of the problem to becoming part of the solution.
