About HALO Trust USA

Overview

The HALO Trust is a non-political, non-religious 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. HALO specializes in the removal of the debris of war including landmines, unexploded ordnance and small arms.

Mission

HALO is a nonprofit, non-political, non-religious organization whose mission statement is “getting mines out of the ground, now” – a practical focus reflected in our record of getting 93% of any donation directly to field operations.

Program

Since pioneering the concept of humanitarian landmine clearance in 1988, HALO has continued to be the leading organization of its kind. We have nearly 8,000 full-time deminers working in ten countries, with on-going surveys into new regions. HALO currently operates in Afghanistan, Cambodia, Angola, Kosovo, Sri Lanka, Georgia, Nagorno Karabakh, Mozambique, Somaliland and Colombia.

Impact

Over 6,300 minefields have been completed and over 350,000 acres of hazardous ground have been cleared and handed back to local communities around the world. Where HALO has completed clearance tasks farmers are now planting their crops, homes and roads are being rebuilt and children walk to school, secure in the knowledge that their next step will be a safe one. By late 2009, HALO had destroyed over 1.2 million landmines, ten million items of larger caliber ordnance, 50 million bullets and over 100,000 assault rifles.

These achievements and those highlighted in this publication are a testament to the dedication of our staff conducting one of the most inherently dangerous jobs on earth, and to the generosity of our donors who understand that our work directly saves lives, and allows a return to normal rural livelihoods in some of the poorest countries in the world.
