Overview
FCI focuses on the following issues: Safe motherhood, to ensure that women have access to the services and support they need to go through pregnancy and childbirth safely; adolescent sexual and reproductive health, to equip young people with information and skills to avoid unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections; HIV/AIDS, to prevent its spread and to encourage integration of HIV/AIDS prevention, testing and treatment services with other sexual and reproductive health programs.
Mission
FCI works to ensure that women and adolescents have access to life-saving services and family planning information to improve their health, experience safe pregnancy and childbirth, and avoid unwanted pregnancy and HIV infection.
Program
FCI advances sexual and reproductive health and rights at the global, regional, and country levels through:
Strengthening national and international commitment to people-centered policies and programs, and encouraging action through the exchange of information and experience.
Building the capacity of local partners in Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean to design, implement, and evaluate national strategies and model programs.
Developing information and training materials that partners can use to improve the quality of their services and strengthen reproductive and sexual health programs.
FCI works with governments, non-governmental organizations, professional groups, and international agencies to improve sexual and reproductive health in developing countries. We build partnerships at all levels to share ideas and experiences, respond to local needs, maximize effective use of resources, minimize duplication, and encourage replication of successful models and approaches.
Impact
Though comparatively small, FCI's impact is impressive. It has distributed hundreds of thousands of copies of its educational materials -- independent evaluations attest to the remarkable impact of many. FCI is a highly-regarded global advocate. Most recently, FCI and partners successfully campaigned to have universal access to reproductive health by 2015 formally incorporated as a Millennium Development Goal target. In country, FCI has developed and successfully implemented a pioneering health model, demonstrating, for the first time, that the full range of basic obstetric care functions can be provided at lower-level health facilities in low-resource settings, at reasonable cost.
