Boundless Playgrounds

Overview

Boundless Playgrounds® was founded in 1997 to help communities create inclusive playgrounds where children with and without disabilities can play and learn together. There are more than 100 completed Boundless™ playgrounds in over 20 states and Canada, with dozens more in development. The organization’s goals are: to continue to build awareness of the need for and benefits of playgrounds for children of all abilities; and to initiate the next 100 Boundless™ playgrounds.

Boundless Playgrounds® is the first national nonprofit dedicated to helping communities create extraordinary barrier-free playgrounds where children, with and without disabilities, can develop essential skills for life as they learn together through play.

Program

Key ways Boundless Playgrounds is working to achieve its goals are by: 1) Offering Boundless Playgrounds Certified Models through playground equipment partners (7 national equipment manufacturers), making it easier/less expensive for communities to build inclusive playgrounds and 2) Providing web-based tools and services for communities through Boundless Playgrounds’ Get Ready…Get Set…Go Play! Membership Programs. Boundless Playgrounds Certified Models can be customized for different price points and to meet specific needs. When combined with registration in the Go Play! Program, a community receives the necessary materials, tools and services to create an inclusive playground that supports child development.

Impact

An estimated six million children in the U.S. have a disability that makes it hard or impossible for them to play on traditional playgrounds. Every day, people contact Boundless Playgrounds to find out how they can start an inclusive playground project. Support from parents, grandparents, corporations, foundations, government agencies, civic groups, parks and recreation professionals and countless others is making a real difference in children’s lives. There are now more than 100 completed Boundless™ playgrounds, with dozens more in development. Millions of children can now experience the shared joy of playing together at a Boundless™ playground in their community.
