Mission

To help create conditions for betterment in the health and well-being of children released by Hospital da Lagoa and their families, and to sever the vicious cycle of misery, illness, admission, release, readmission, and death by promoting bio-psycho-social development, forming citizens and allowing for a basis of self-sustainability of family.

Program

Renascer works with 230 to 250 families per month, following each child and family for about two years. Families are assessed monthly and receive food and medication until they achieve a set of a very well- defined criteria for discharge. To help families sustain themselves, professional training courses are offered for family members.

Renascer also offers families legal orientation for obtaining documents, government benefits, legal advice and contact with other supportive institutions, and Renascer’s Housing Project promotes home refurbishing.

Impact

Renascer has helped over 7,000 children and 2,000 families. Based on family data from 2005, before Renascer, 21.6% of the children were in good health, 30.4% in satisfactory health, and 45.6% in life-threatening conditions. After assistance, the numbers grew to 47.2% in good health, drop to 28% in satisfactory health, and dropped to 22.4% in life-threatening conditions. Family income increased by 58% after Renascer.
