Description:

PURPOSE: To assist youth in enhancing their academic skills; specifically targeting reading and math skills. Using proven techniques and curriculum, volunteers will be able to see the differences in children’s reading and math abilities and decrease the number of young people who are falling behind in their academic skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Spend as much one-on-one time with each child as possible. Encourage children to remain on task. Guide children in activities for intellectual development. Assist in identifying barriers to success. Enforce behavior management techniques consistent with written policy and other program staff. Know and carry out appropriate health and safety procedures for the protection of children. Agree to mandated child abuse reporting guidelines.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Have a special interest or experience in working with children. Some coursework in education or child development a plus. Possess good interpersonal and communication skills. Possess mature judgment and demonstrate ability to manage children’s behavior in a positive manner. Able to relate to children and youth from diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. Able to be flexible, work closely with staff, and be open to occasional adjustments of work schedules.
