Description:

For 24 years, Cojolya has been committed to preserving the art of backstrap loom weaving. A new threat has arisen to theaten this art form: the recent lack of locally grown fibers for thread. Cojolya wishes to investigate the possibility of developing bamboo grown for fiber and its production in Guatemala. Volunteer would investigate suitablility of local conditions for growing specific species of bamboo necessary for fiber production, plus the requirements for a small-scale production facility, giving special attention to all environmental aspects of such a project.
Study could most likely be completed within two months. Work will involve on-line research and communication, local investigation and travel, mostly around the immediate vicinity of Santiago Atitlan in the region of Solola.

Volunteer will be responsible for their own transportation to and from Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala, and will have to pay for their accomodations and food. Room & Board is available from Q1500/mo (7Q=1$) to $150/week. Furnished houses and apts are also available for rent.
