Description:

Water for Waslala (WfW) program (http://www.waterforwaslala.org) seeks a volunteer international development project manager/fundraiser to raise awareness and funds to combat the water crisis affecting over 30,000 residents in Waslala, Nicaragua. This is a full-time twelve-month volunteer position beginning in July 2007 and ending June 2008. Candidate will spend year in Chicago, New York or Boston, speaking in high schools, colleges and parishes about water crisis in Nicaragua, organizing fundraisers, publishing articles in local newspapers and planning local fundraising events. Candidate expected to raise $50,000 to help build 4 new water systems in Nicaragua, which will benefit nearly 1,000 poor Waslalans for a lifetime. Strong organizational skills, good public speaking skills, the ability to work independently, comfortability using Microsoft Office, and comfortability working alone are necessary.

Two-week travel to Nicaragua at the start of the volunteer year is required. No personal fees will be required for the trip. Candidate will stay with a US translator at the rectory of the parish of Waslala.

This volunteer position has a spiritual component as well. Candidate would be accepted into the Augustinian Volunteers (http://www.osavol.org), a Catholic volunteer organization which manages WfW, and would live in a community with 2-5 other young adults seeking to deepen faith and spirituality. Water for Waslala position is part of this ministry. Non-college graduates or adults over the age of 29 are not eligible for this position.

Candidate will live in a house or apartment provided by the Augustinian Volunteers in either Chicago, the Bronx or Lawrence, MA, and will incur no rent, utilities or maintenance expenses. The volunteer will also receive a $35 weekly stipend for food, $25 weekly stipend for personal expenses, and a tank of gasoline for the car provided to your volunteer community. No fee is required for this position.
